If you lived in Japan, you’d have a second way to apply your Shiseido shadow: To your virtual self. Now loading blue eyeliner. Continue?
StyleList has an über-glammy wrap up of all the pretty things in 2008 that we snapped up, slathered on, buffered down, and even electrically charged (oh stop, you dirty thing. We’re talking about mascara).
Beauty & The Blog has called a few trends that have waxed between being gorgeously worth it, and fodder for snide, “Did you seriously wear that?” from future offspring. Here’s a peek at the trends we at least tried on and tried to love. What were your favorites of 2008?
1. Neon peeled itself out of the 80s and showed back up on runways as early as February. If you didn’t love construction zone cone shades then, you probably took a pass on the brief revival of hyper-color shirts….but even the most devoutly neon-fearing took a polish to hot-hued nail color.
2. Man makeup was a category once solely populated by Jack Sparrow, Pete Wentz and the scariest looking member of the Rolling Stones, but 2008 proved to be the year men started needing their own makeup bags with concealer tricks, eyeliner lessons, and even celebrity-inspired wax jobs. Things began looking pretty…at first. Regrettably, this trend got scary fast. Mantyhose, anyone?
3. Mascara, it seems, is always up for reinvention. Every 11 minutes, a new formula comes out that promises to plump, voluminize, feather, lift, separate, and do your taxes. But how often do you hear about revolutionary wands? First Givenchy came out with a wrecking ball-shaped wand that works miracles (warning: You’ll want to practice on a few lashes first, ladies), followed by Lancome’s vibrating wand. Talk about buzz!
4. Hair always makes the list, but it’s usually for cut or style. 2008, however, will be known as The Year We Discovered How To Skip Showers. Dry shampoo poofed onto the market and into our bathrooms, forever giving us ways to stretch a blowout, freshen up post-gym, and otherwise claim to be “conserving water.” Further aiding and abetting our dirty habits: Oscar Blandi’s honeysuckle-scented formula. Admit it: Dry shampoo that smells better than deodorant, soap, or even perfume is a better invention than the automobile.
5. High Definition Makeup is the best thing that’s happened not just to newscasters, actors, talk show hosts, pageant queens, etc, but also for anyone who owns a hi-def TV. Like your talking heads with a side dish of pores and a dash of wrinkles? No? Frankly, neither did we. Plus, now that we have makeup that can handle the 6x magnification of hi-def, even the non-televised can be ready for a close up any minute.

Ready for your first round of predictions for 2009? Pierce Mattie just released a list of ingredients you’ll start seeing more of in the next year. These aren’t just any ingredients; these are natural picks that make beauty products do more. From antioxidant-packed berries to vitamin-rich add-ins, get ready for the year of pretty ingredients.
How do we know this? We’ve already snapped up products that feature these magical wonders.
Argan Oil: This incredible skin care miracle, known for being one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin E with 80% essential fatty acids, has been a beauty secret of Moroccan women for centuries. It can be dually used on skin and in hair for its high level of antioxidants and ability to replenish hair and skin’s natural moisture.
Future forward: Argan oil is the secret ingredient in Josie Maran’s makeup!
Acai: Sometimes referred to as “The Fountain of Youth,” this Brazilian berry contains antioxidants, amino acids, essential omegas, fibers and protein that positions itself as a formidable fighter in anti-aging products. Acai can be found across the board in skin care, cosmetics and hair care products.
Future forward: Find this in tarte’s cheek stain!
Goji Berries: This nutrient-rich berry, well known as Wolfberries in the Himalayas, has often been called a “super food” due to its abilities to fight free radicals and boost the immune system. While there are no inherent benefits of Goji in fragrance, that hasn’t stopped perfumers from including this sweet yet tart scent into their perfumes.
Future forward: Smashbox added this to O-Gloss!
Baobab: Rich in riboflavin, niacin and vitamins C, A, D and E, baobab has incredible anti-aging properties although you won’t just find it in creams and moisturizers, but also in exfoliating scrubs and hair care.
Future forward:Korres puts this in their Wild Rose serums!
Acerola: Ingredients high in Vitamin C, like acerola, are being used more often due to their ability to even out skin tone and brighten complexion. Skin care brands will be using acerola more to target those who have issues with skin redness and inflammation.
Future forward: Find this in nude skincare!
Blueberry: Chock full of amino acids, vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, blueberries are another super food that will be used to fight aging in beauty products. Also known as a “super fruit,” blueberries have long been known for its ability to revitalize the skin; it was just a matter of time before beauty brands began to incorporate it more into their skin care products.
Future forward: Try out Ole Henrikksen’s berry mask!
Probiotics: Last year Pierce Mattie PR termed probiotics a “buzzword” among beauty brands, but now those brands are delivering more than just buzz with this sister category to Cosmeceuticals and Nutraceuticals. Probiotic skin care will be branded as another “clinical-like” line of products, which beauty consumers tend to lean towards as science-based.
Future forward: Try it as a supplement in PerriconeMD!
Palmitoyl Tripeptide-3: This Cosmeceutical is found more often in anti-aging products to fight fine lines and wrinkles will be even more prevalent in 2009. Products that contain Palmitoyl Tripeptide-3 will be branded as a temporary alternative to cosmetic procedures.
Future forward: Try Palmitoyl Tripeptide-7 in Peter Thomas Roth first!
Myrrh: With the increasing popularity of Ayurveda in the Unites States, this ancient ingredient is also showing up in perfumes and skin care products. The rich royal resin with the slight vanilla fragrance so popular in incense also stimulates circulation and has lifting effects.
Future forward: Bliss has this in their new Vanilla+Bergamont body butter!
Turmeric: A highly regarded ingredient in India, Turmeric is widely known for its medicinal properties. Turmeric will be found in acne-related creams and lotions, as it is an antiseptic and can aid in preventing and removing blemishes. It will also be found in hair removal products as well as in the formulation of sunscreen in more natural products as well.
Future forward: Find it in Sephora’s Power Mask - Fusio-Fiber Face Mask

It’s class participation time here at B&TB. Now, please don’t get all excited; I haven’t the co. clearance to give away goodies. I’m just wondering out loud again, and I’d like to get your feedback on this Q I’ve got.
Do wear a full-face to work out?
Personally, I’m lucky if I can successfully climb out of bed, throw on something that isn’t smelly and get to the class on time. So, when I met a girl with a well-thought out ensemble, a shiny blow out and full—and I mean full—faché in my Pilates class the other day (did I mention it was 7am?), it got me thinking:
A. What the heck time did she get up?
B. Is there something wrong with me for looking like a gitana?
C. Am I alone in the gitanisim?

Ever since make up artist and Revlon creative director Lucy Halperin created this custom shade for London Graduate Fashion Week, I’ve been smitten.
It’s dark, it’s seedy but really rather glamorous as well if worn with golden eyes and messy, wavy hair (I like to pin mine up into a faux bob). The only time in my life that I’ve received a random, nice comment on my appearance on the London Tube was when wearing this stuff. For instructions on how to wear the goth glam look this season, Daniel Sandler’s created some ace videos for Elle.tv. Watch this one and learn how to re-create dark eyes and lips:
